ABOUT CITIZENSHIP COUNTS
In 2008, Citizenship Counts was founded by renowned author, Holocaust survivor, 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and proud naturalized citizen, Gerda Weissmann Klein. We are a national, non-partisan, 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate middle and high school students on the tenets of citizenship, encourage them to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as Americans and give them an opportunity to celebrate their citizenship by engaging in a naturalization ceremony.
Our core curriculum promotes pride in American citizenship and encourages students to be involved in their communities. We aim to empower young people to be responsible, participatory and socially-just citizens who appreciate the benefits of living in a diverse, inclusive, democratic country. Citizenship Counts provides an interactive, multi-disciplinary civic education curriculum at no cost, as well as additional educational materials and external resources to help teachers develop a service-learning classroom project. In addition, we facilitate student-planned and school-hosted naturalization ceremonies, working with community volunteers and building relationships with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Federal Courts and other governmental agencies. Our program has been utilized in schools and after school programs in 38 states across the nation. We are committed to promoting civic education throughout the country.
