Media & PR Internship Opportunity

INTERNSHIP CRITERIA:

We are searching for a student with excellent communication skills, both oral and written.  The ideal candidate will have experience using social media networks and/or blogs, especially for marketing purposes.  We need a dynamic, organized, responsible self-starter who can effectively manage various components of our media outreach. An interest in education, nonprofit management, and/or politics is recommended.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

This internship offers a tremendous opportunity to work with both local and national media.  The internship entails writing press releases, conducting media pitches, and creating updates to our website. In addition, our Media and Public Relations Intern will manage our online newsletter, which is sent to our Advisory and Governing Boards, as well as a listserv of politicians, educators, and other stakeholders in various communities across the country. The intern will research magazine and newspaper articles and websites about topics related to civics education/citizenship and to be shared daily via our social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) or blogs.  He/she will also coordinate media relations for our local and national events.  The intern will work in tandem with Citizenship Counts Program Coordinator, other staff, board members, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Federal Courts, and teachers and students who are implementing our program.

As we plan for the 2012-2013 school year, we will continue to expand our efforts throughout the country. The intern will work in tandem with staff and utilize their blogs, which documented the Journey, and will advertise our events and campaigns using both internet-based social media and print media.

The nonpaid internship requires a commitment of a minimum 12 hours a week. The student will earn course credit for their internship. (The number of credit hours will be determined by the number of hours worked). The intern is expected to attend a weekly meeting with Citizenship Counts staff to discuss progress on assignments and share ideas for building our media campaign.  It is imperative that the intern is disciplined and can complete their assignments on time.
